Steel Excellence Award Wins

July, 2014

A W Edwards received two awards at the recent NSW & ACT Steel Excellence Awards held in Sydney.

The MA Noble and Don Bradman Stand Roof, part of the SCG Stage 2 Redevelopment Project, received a High Commendation for Steel Excellence in the ‘Buildings- Large Projects’ category.

Steel was the material of choice for the stands’ floating roof. The structure consists of a central spine truss supported by an upper concourse slab through inclined struts at three locations. A series of radial trusses cantilever from the spine to support purlins and sheeting. The stadium remained open throughout construction and met a series of staged handovers, in and around scheduled live events.

This project was submitted by A W Edwards and Arup.

Similarly the White Bay Cruise Terminal project received a High Commendation for Steel Excellence in the ‘Buildings- Large Projects’ category. The cruise terminal features a wave-form roof draped from a historically significant gantry crane structure augmented with new structural steel. The structural skeleton comprises a bolted grillage of curved tubular members, the shape of each comprising only straight segments and circular arcs which greatly simplified fabrication.

This project was submitted by the A W Edwards team along with Taylor Thomson Whitting and Johnson Pilton Walker.

Congratulations to all involved.
